The new Distimo Report came out this week. Looking at the stats would make you think people with Android devices are more serious than all those folks with iOS devices. According to the Distimo Report, there are no games in the top 10 paid or top 10 free apps in the Google Android Market. Nope. Not one. Eight of the top 10 paid iPhone apps and seven of the top 10 free iPhone apps in the Apple App Store are games. That’s 15 out of 20.
What’s going on here? It’s not that there are no Android games. The top publisher in the Android Market is Lupis Labs, a game developer. And here’s a link from Gamespot listing the top Android games. Plenty of listings. A beta version of Angry Birds, the number one paid iPhone game in the Distimo Report, was released in the Android Market on September 3, 2010. No doubt the birds will quickly fly to the top of the Android app list.
Is it a price issue? Wouldn’t seem so. Distimo reports that 60% of the apps in the Android Market are free, compared to 29% for iPhone and 26% for iPad.
Maybe Android users are just more serious. Or maybe the Android game market is ripe for new mobile app development.
