General MIDI Player is an easy way to turn your Mac into an instrument, using its built-in General MIDI support. Starting in version 2, it also plays back type 1 General MIDI files! You can play the General MIDI instruments using either your mouse, computer keyboard (including support for non-US keyboards), or MIDI device (both hardware and software MIDI devices supported). You can even play along yourself while a General MIDI song plays at the same time. It has a simple, one-screen interface, that will let you start making music with your favorite General MIDI instrument in seconds!

Works Perfectly On M1 Mac Mini
This is the best tool found for quickly playing midi files. Also very useful for testing out accompaniments in different instrument settings. Basically love it. Worth every penny. Using it with the Nektar SE 61. Beats all other badly done UI keyboard hardware with just the simple Nektar SE and the GM Midi application. Only wish two things: 1) It had a playback bar and slider to see what time location is playing and to move around to different parts of the song. 2) Higher range (gain) on the volume control. Even at the highest setting it is not equal to normal volume levels from other apps. Thus is it hard to use in combination with anything else playing audio. Show more

    One small problem, otherwise perfect.
Everytime I close the app, I get a message that pops up and says "the app quit unexpectedly." That shouldn't happen because I quit the app intentionally. It's not a huge problem, but it gets annoying after a while. Plus, a report is automatically sent to Apple when that error comes up, so in other words, Apple will know everytime I close GM Player. The app itself works great. It plays all my midi files with no problems (at least so far). They all sound as expected: reverb, tempo, instrument, tracks, all attributes seem to be output properly. The only problem I'm having (again) is the "quit unexpecredly" error that comes up whenever I close the app. Hopefully this can be fixed. Show more

    Nice design.
Hoping to use it with the built in Mac OS general midi instruments as an alternative to Garage Band sounnds.

Worked for a while then stopped
I was using this with an iRig Keys and it was fine, then today it just stopped working. iRig still works with other software (Logic, Finale) so that's not the issue. Did a restart and a re-install - no luck. Oh well. It did work for a couple of months, anyway. Show more

    Great app, and responsive developer!
It does what it says on the label. And when I requested a new feature (ability to play the drum kit on MIDI channel 10) they implemented it! Yay!

    Simple, effective, inexpensive MIDI Player
This is an excellent little program if you just need to play sounds on your computer using 1) mouse on screen keyboard 2) MIDI controller keyboard input 3) computer keyboard The interface is VERY simple, so it’s incredibly useful in just getting your MIDI controller up and running. I had problems with other music programs — they have complicated interfaces with buried, obscure settings and I could not get the computer to recognize my little MIDI keyboard (LPK25) in order to play sounds. If you can’t get the hardware to produce a sound at all, you can’t get off the ground, and it’s very frustrating. For playing MIDI files or composing, editing, and playing MIDI files from MIDI keyboard I recommend Aria Maestosa. Make sure you 1) choose the right MIDI channel (if “any” doesn’t work, try 1) 2) sound output(click on speaker icon below Output) is turned on (OFF is the default — I would suggest that ON be the default) Show more

How about “Half of a MIDI player?"
Any MIDI player I ever heard of would allow a person to input MIDI (.mid) files and play back the music. This one does not even do that. It is usless. If you can’t create or playback MIDI files, then it cannot rightfully be called a MIDI player. Show more
