This is a book , not an app.
The content is well written and explains the concepts very well. However, I thought I was purchasing an interactive app and was surprised to see that is was a book.

    Book, not the app
This is not the music making app but a very expensive book explaining how to use the app.

    Totally 5 Stars! Get it!
Alright, so it’s for beginners. I’m no beginner but I have never seen practical how-to songwriting content laid out so concisely and accurately. If you’re just starting out trying to write songs and figure out chords, this could almost suffice as the one reference you need to understand what you are doing. Excellent work, thanks to the authors! And after you get this one, then move to HookTheory II where the fun continues! Show more

Unfortunately I’m not very quick at math
Unfortunately I’m not very quick at math. Everything was fine until it introduced the chord numbers correlating to scale degrees. Then it felt like it was hopping, skipping, and jumping away from the pace it started with, in describing everything. Sort of like someone saying ‘This is a ball. Now toss the ball in the air. Neat huh? Now here’s 2 other balls and now toss them into the opposite hands while one is tossed in mid-air, and then repeat the process. Now you’re juggling! Make sense??.” My guitar teacher did this with me too, and I just sat there with my eyes glazed over. Still wasn’t getting it, but he wouldn’t slow down to bridge the pieces. I would have preferred it rest into the concept more thoroughly to emphasize the structure at the pace it started with as it introduced the chord numbers. So... hopefully somehow I’ll learn music theory. Someday. Maybe? Show more

    Amazing
Amazing tool for students and professionals. Speaking from the perspective of a professional musician and educator who performs high level work in the field.

    Great instruction
I’m happy with the material. Small issues with sound on iOS but figured it out quickly. Highly recommended for anyone looking to step up their songwriting. Similar to the Nashville number system but with extensive detail. Thank you for the product. Show more

    Needs an update
Love the content, especially the emphasis on scale degrees, but it badly needs an update. Does not support iPhone X devices, and sometimes crashes when opening videos. For $15 it should at least support the latest hardware Show more

Really the right thing for me
Long time player, should but can’t read music. I really have enjoyed exploring with this tool. Money very well spent. I have two quibbles: 1. I want the videos to play in place so I don’t have to exit the player after each one. 2. I want hookpad on the phone and with the tap of a button, I want it loaded up with the snippet I just heard or clicked Nonetheless this is seriously a great and efficient guide to music theory. Best way to learn the most important parts of music theory
I’ve never seen it visualized so well. I can’t thank the creators enough.

Mind is exploding with the amount of aha moments
This is so well written. I am loving this journey to understand music. It's answering questions I've felt in music but didn't have the vocabulary to ask. Amazing job. Btw, SIT WITH A PIANO/KEYBOARD WHEN READING THIS. It's a 1000x better if you are sitting with some kind of a keyboard/piano while reading so that you can try things as you are reading. Ok back to the book. Show more

    GREAT PRODUCT
I see people complaining about how it's $15. If $15 is so much to you maybe you don't want to learn this as much as you thought you did. The content in this app is worth much more than $15 and is taught in a way that is so easily grasped that if you are a beginner or an expert you can learn things that other videos/websites cannot teach you. Very well put together and worth the $15 if you have a true passion for music Show more

Hook Theory Have Abandoned This App
Playback on almost every single clip does not work, and Hook Theory have done absolutely nothing to correct the problem. Without the benefit of audio examples, this is no different that reading the same basic principles that can be found in any music theory book, or on any music theory website. Show more

    Finally someone explains it easily
I've read many different sources of materials trying to explain chord progressions, Melody, etc. None of them truly sank in. This one immediately made sense and now I finally understand it. I wish I had this in the beginning. Show more

    Decent, with bugs...
I had to shut down and restart every 4 - 5 pages because the "movies" stop working. P.S., they arent really movies, theyre audio examples with some animation. None are longer than 20 seconds and they are all low quality midi. That isnt really a bad thing because it forces you to listen to the harmony, not the production quality of the recording. I'll probably get the next installment, but this could be done better, given the price. More advanced folks should check out mdecks tonal harmony app. This is a great introduction to the topic though. Show more

    This is AMAZING!!!
Flat out the best app to learn basic music theory. This app is perfect for: Beginners People who play an instrument(s) People who want to wired their own music. Music is an art form and although every rule can be broken, knowing basic form and structure will make the process more fun and less tedious. This app helped me: Start and develop a musical idea quickly Recognize what will make it a "catchy" tune And add variety in general. There is so much more I could say about this app but if you are serious about understanding music better just get is app. You can finish it in a few hours and use it as a reference as often as you need it. Best part is... You really don't need to understand "notes"per-se, music is explained with numbers so it is super easy to understand. Show more
