    Doesn’t work with Cubasis
Doesn’t show in Cubasis 3 under audiobus or inter-app. Useless. Sent email to support but no response.

    Sounds great, limited connectivity
Used to be my favorite lead synth but with ios 14.4 it recieves midi on all channels even when selecting a specific channel. So, i can’t really use it

    AUM AV3
Would be great if I could use in AUM or if this were AV3.

    Amazing!!
Seriously, buy this app! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this before tonight. Sounds so thick, so other worldly. Great for scoring or ambient. Can also do “normal” sounds but it’s so much more than that. Would love to be able to use more than one wave form at a time in an update. Show more

    Awesome But...
Beautiful sounding app. Elegant interface. One star off only because if my screen sleeps it dies even though I have checked the Run in background option. Despite that it is still well worth having. Show more

    Unique approach to synthesis
This is real nice full body synth as a pose to others which tend to sound cheap. Real good clean sound and presets are really usable unlike other apps. A really good addition probably one of the best sounding apps I have heard in a while. Show more

    innovative digital warmth
Photophore introduces a unique approach to digital synthesis that is able to produce a wide variety of very impressive sounds, and I am excited to see what an update will bring. I hear there is one on the way. Right now the synthesis model is simply very cool, and I have no criticism at all for the basic idea here. What would make this a five-star synth for iOS, besides the obvious (I hope) addition of a multi-octave keyboard that is visible against the dark interface: more time-domain variable controls. I realize standard LFO's might break the concept of moving away from analog modeling, but surely there are ways to utilize auxiliary flocking algorithms to control the main flocking algorithms producing the sound so that they evolve in complex ways. Or something. :) This is a creatively implemented synth; I suspect the devs could come up with something equally creative to nudge Photophore along its very promising potential career as a powerful sound design tool. I highly recommend buying this now to help pay for the next version. There is enough here already to make it worth its very reasonable price. Show more

    Digital Warmth
This is still one of my favorite iPad synths. It could use an update though. I'd love to see a Midi Learn function, for example. You can set the mod wheel to control one parameter at a time, but for those of us with midi keyboards that have lots of knobs and faders, it would be great to be able to control everything at once. Also, can the arpeggiator sync to external time clocks? I haven't figured out how to do it. At any rate, it's a good sounding synth. Very unique. And I love the little animations on the screen. Decent
I'm sure many of you are like me and can't resist snapping up any new synth given how cheap they are. After a few sessions with this, though, I'd recommend shooting straight to the superior Mitosynth. The on-screen keyboard is a pain. Show more

Innovative and well executed… thanks for the update!
This version has new waveforms and glide! Sweet! It’s great to see that it is still possible to do something new when it comes to iOS synths, of which there are now many. This app creates lovely lush timbres with beautiful organic motion to them, while providing a hypnotic visual experience. Controls are easy to access and thoughtfully laid out, and the whole app is easy on the eyes. It’s a unique and useful addition to your sonic arsenal, so be sure to check it out. Show more

Cool sounds, more save/export options please!
You can get some really great swarmatron-esque sounds out of this app. I dig the simple interface and the available presets for jumping in and making sounds easily. I'd love to see an in-app solution for record/save/export in future versions. Show more

    Great interface AWSOME sound UPDATE
Need a really fun and great sounding synth that inspires ?Well you can't go wrong here. Please give this the ability to rename patches. It also has a great twist on cross modulation with its flocking setting! And the ability to store all parameters within each patch should be a standard for all other iOS synths to follow suite. Not to mention the really well thought out envelopes and the ability to multiply the oscillators in a way that can be instantly felt and heard in a tangible and lush fashion is so needed in a sea of LETS REINVENT THE WHEEL SYNTHS.Bottom line is YES there are other synths that do these kinds of things.. But none of them do it this well and so easily! This synth Rocks!.peace Christo????? Show more

    DO NOT BUY PHOTOPHORE SYNTH
Contrary to the glowing reviews listed here, Photophore Synth is simply a new coat of paint on tired old synth sounds. The twinkling lights are interesting if you’re still in puberty. This app is a toy for boys, not a synth with any uniqueness or power. Save your money until developers bring out something distinct and powerful. There are already good examples of powerful synths in the app store. This synth is just a dressed up 5 minute tart…. Show more

    Insanely fun!
I gotta say, I've tried a lot of iPad synths and I usually regret wasting my money on them after a few minutes. They're just generally not terribly inspiring and feel cheap and plastic. Photophore is the first synth I've bought on here and really gotten excited. It made me want to write a new song! The concept is incredibly cool and the sounds are out of this world amazing. I can't wait to get everything set up so I can control it via keyboard instead of just the touch screen. Awesome job! The only thing I can think of to request would be a swarmatron type mode where you can legato bend and flow through a patch. Show more

    A good first attempt
I liked the concept enough to buy it. I discovered that there many more features to implement. Lfo modulation, modulation in general, more filter choices, more randomization with controls to name a few. Please keep developing this VERY kool sounding interactive synth! Show more

The thing will not play a sound.

Great start, needs a few things
When I saw demos for this app, I immediately knew I'd love it. Synth apps that utilize the instant gratification of the touch screen interface are surprisingly few, but this one feels playful and interactive. A few small things that would bring this to five stars... a random order option for the arp, and a few more waveforms, particularly a clean sine wave. Having dozens of pure sines bouncing off of each other would be fantastic. I don't mind using audiobus for effects, but having a few more basic effects would be great, maybe trem? If there was volume modulation/trem per voice (flock), this app would be truly amazing. Great work, I can't wait to see what future updates bring. Show more

Not worth your time if it was free.
Relative to the awesome synths that are out there in the App Store this one is worse then Meh. Compared to Bebot (toy synth category) this does not deserve any more then one star, but compared to animoog or prophet it deserves a negative star. The limited presets sound are not useable for anything but techno, there nothing "organic"about any of the sounds. The graphical display of swarming balls when touched detunes and garbles the sound and thus has no sound shaping benefit. What a waste of time and money. Show more

An instant classic for warm, rich sounds
Photophore wasn't a highly anticipated synth, but it turned out to be an instant favorite of mine. The key draw here is the extreme overlaying of oscillators (up to 100) over one another to get rich, full sounds. I run the app on an older iPad2, and it does work, though I tend to limit oscillators to 20 and no more than 4 or 5 notes for polyphony. The app excels at lush pad sounds, but that's not all it does. There's also some great lead and bass sounds and you have full control over the "ADSR" filtering on sounds. I found the interface VERY easy to navigate and it was easy to save presets. (The app comes with an average number of varied presets, but you can make more easily). Great synth. Would recommend dedicating less space to the "flock" interface, as this is a subtle innovation, but tends to detract from the real estate from the keys, which are too small. Show more
