This is the closest thing to a kontakt-type sample player for iOS because it has multi-layer and round robin support. What would make it even better are the following: a purge unused function, multi-out support, batch editing for multiple zones, and macro (customizable gui?) support. Obviously, these are just suggestions and I can get what I need out of it as-is for the most part. Hopefully the developer will continue to develop this great tool! Show more

The sampler works great, and I love the EXS24 importing. BUT I can’t use the app with my live performance setup because I can’t switch instruments via MIDI program change messages. This is an essential function which I hope the author adds in a future update. Show more

I used to LOVE this app! Closest thing to Kontakt for the iPad! But with this latest update, it no longer allows me to load custom exs24 or sfz instruments? It gives me this error that says samples are missing? I’m not sure why this just started happening after I updated, but if youguys can fix this, then 5-Star rating for sure! Sorry for the bad review, but this is going to be a killer if this issue never resolved! Please let me know if youguys can fix this. Thank you! PS. i bought this to multisample external synths, but any multisamples are not savable in the AUM plugin since ios 13 according the error. also found it very frustrating that the MIDI out channel can be set. always on channel 1 Show more

The one thing that attracted me to this plug-in was that you can import SFZ and EXS files. I have not had any luck importing EXS for sample packs, but SFZ works fine. Another thing that makes AudioLayer attractive is the ability to layer sampler instruments on top over each other, in the same instance. It also comes with some pretty good effects. My favorite is the Drive effect. There’s also a wet/dry knob for effects to control the insensity. I’d throw a 5 star, but not having modwheel support for pitch is a bummer. What’s weird is that you can see “MWheel” control on the FILTER page, but not on the PITCH page. To Harry: Can you please add MWheel to the PITCH page? That’s all I’m missing to make my lead sound jazzy. Thank you very much for all your hard work on the plug-in. I really appreciate it. Show more

It’s a sampler and it’s great!!!! It simple to use plus not to mention a genius idea!!!! Why keep loading and setting up samples in BM3, Cubasis, Roland Zenbeats etc….. It’s an AU load everything here and load multiple instances in your daw!!!! No brainer right?!?!?!?!?! In addition to that you can save everything so when you buy a new iPad you just re-download you don’t reload!!!! Show more

I am shocked that this isn’t rated 5. This is the only true sampler for iOS and it is amazing. Everything is laid out in an easy to understand way so even beginners can get right to making a multi sampled, well, anything. And the more you delve into it the better it gets. Just the fact that it has the ability to auto sample makes it great. If you’ve ever used any hardware sampler, Mirage, Ensoniq ASR-10, Akai S series etc… this is what you are looking for. Hopefully in the future I would like to see some basic additions. Maybe a bit crusher to emulate older samplers or such. A more extensive EQ. Minor things. If you’re serious about music and making your own sounds, buy this. Show more

The updated manual which details support for SFZ instruments and importing them is a welcome addition as you can really dive in to create your own custom instruments or modify existing ones you discover. It provides links to other resources to take advantage of what’s possible with sample instruments. The visual feedback in AudioLayer is excellent for troubleshooting your sample instruments to verify they’re working as you’ve intended. The disk streaming works well to allow you to use large detailed sample sets. These sample instruments allow you to create various timbres from the same sample set. Round robin functionality allows your playing to be more varied and rich rather than mechanical. There’s a wide range of high quality sample instruments available online. You don’t have to settle for the same old ones and you can customize them to make them your own. It’s a very efficient app and won’t grind your iPad to a standstill when you run multiple instances of the app. There are some very nice instruments and useful orchestral instruments you can download from within the app. Show more

This app is my workhorse sampler and has been rock solid for a long stretch. No longer. The last update has caused several issues—some are feature bugs that I can deal with because there are workarounds. The DSP spikes as an AU are really troublesome however. Nothing else in my rig has changed (still on iOS 13.3) so the spikes have to be caused by AL; I wish I could revert to the last version. No response from the developer through the website. Show more

This has always been a decent app, and nowadays it might even be very good. I’ll definitely update this review as I explore the updates that have passed since I stopped using it because of an issue I used to have sampling as AUV3 fx. It would crash after sampling/configuring more than 5-6 samples/layers. I do feel like this has been addressed but since I’m only going about this from what I remember from reading the update notes of the updates I missed (which I read as such updates came out but never actually explored since I’ve been kind of busy ever since). If this has been fixed I will come back for a 5 star update, as otherwise this app was pretty good even with the issues it had. Show more

The amazingly badly designed user interface makes this potentially powerful app all but useless. You either have to import everything all at once via the poorly documented batch operation, or delete it all, edit outside the app, and try again. Made a small error? Delete it all and start again because the user interface makes selecting and changing small elements too difficult? Selected the wrong thing and you want to deselect so that you can see what’s going on? Forget it: tap in an empty space and you get the load dialog. Tap out of that, and your unwanted selection is still there. Pinch zoom into make it easier to select? Forget it: pinch zoom is so limited, you can never make tiny elements large enough to manipulate. So just edit their data fields by hand? Forget it: you can view the data for each zone, but you can change things via the graphical interface. Sometimes the tiny graphical control items don’t even appear on the screen. Simply scroll to one side to make them visible? Forget it: they’re so far to the side that the iPad always snaps the screen back to push the elements out of sight again. So reach blindly and hope you grab the right thing and placed it in the right spot? There you go! But oops you made a small placement error, so manually delete everything, do another batch import, and do it all over again. Classic case of logical, theoretically correct, yet utterly incompetent user interface design. Thinking of buying this tedious time waster? Forget it! Show more

Bought this specifically to lay sfz files - sfz file import doesn’t work. Followed the VirSyn instruction video exactly even used the same file they use in the video. The only thing that happens is the sfz “opens” in the Files app and shows the file info. Show more

This is pretty much the only thing missing from my arsenal, now I can put away the laptop for good. Not only that, it is better than the alternatives on the laptop. I have been sampling since the ensoniq ASR-10 and this is everything I’ve always wanted in a sampler. Super super happy with the features and the GUI and the workflow. THANK YOU VirSyn!!! Couple notes, I crashes periodically in AUM for me and needs to be reloaded. Turns red with an error message. Second, one feature I’d request is an undo function. Seems like a no-brainer to include. We all make mistakes from time to time. Show more

I have put this app on 3 different iPads and on 2 iPhone’s and the same thing keeps happening. If it doesn’t crash the presets won’t change. The keyboard in Auv3 mode is none responsive. I never got any use out of this app I paid for. Please fix it for real or just give back my money. Show more

Great sampler, especially once you get to know it better, some of the features may not be that intuitive but it has some great features and the new Auto sampler is something I’ve always wanted in an IOS, i love being able to sample patches automatically from non AUV3 apps. The 2 features that I would love to see are time stretching so if I auto sample something with effect or modulation the sample doesn’t spreed up as I play higher note, and a feature that auto chops samples across all the keys automatically. I have ReSlice that doesn’t that but would love to have that feature in AudioLayer because of the much deeper ways you can affect layers and key groups independently. Besides that I think this is the best IPad sampler. Show more
