Really like how easy it is to enter notes, either recording directly or drawing manually, and editing them on the piano roll grid. Good quantization too. Great interface and solid performance running with my AUM sessions. I do wish there was a way to control the transport or track mutes via MIDI, or some way to start/stop sequences without opening up the app. I find myself going back to Modstep for that capability. This is a really great, well designed sequencer and miles ahead of GarageBand in terms of efficiency and power. I especially appreciate the auto melody generator, the ability to use scales system-wide, and the ease of editing notes. However, unlike nearly every other iPad app, YOU MUST REMEMBER TO PRESS “SAVE” MANUALLY. Auto save usually works, but for some reason it didn’t work for me this time, loading only a blank file. I had rarely remembered to press the actual save button, so I lost hours of work.⏱ Also, when you delete or change a controller that you have already tweaked in Pianoroll or Keyboard view, it doesn’t seem to reset that controller value properly, so the result will still sound different until you restart the external synth app. (EDIT: Not this app’s fault! It’s an issue with the specific app I’m using, Roland Sound Canvas.) Another feature that would be appreciated is SysEx support.? Anyway, the app is good, but save your work. Show more

At first I was just testing Xequence out here and there with some instruments in Aum and finding it a joy to work with until I recently decided to try out the Bluetooth connection between my iPad and workstation because I didn’t realize how low the latency would be, but now I’m having more fun composing in Xequence with my DAWs (Ableton and Cubase). While this isn’t going to cover all the midi features cubase has, it has all the essential ingredients to get the notes and cc data along with efficient use of editing features. It’s EFFICIENT. It’s more immediate than having one hand on the keyboard and the other on the trackball. I literally have the piano roll in my hands. And if you want to experiment, there Polyhymnia! Just playing with the options in realtime works as a live performance tool! I use Beatmaker 3 frequently which has its own piano roll but the size is still confined; now I have more space to work with in Xequence! It’s a no brainer Show more

Sorry devs, you deserve it all but really AUV3 is a must now and especially for such an amazing midi app. If this was an auv3, even if it could only be instanced once (like audiokit looper), it would be 1000 better. If you don’t care about AUV3, don’t even doubt it you will love this. And if you do care... maybe invest on it and figure it out. I haven’t used it at all, but not because it isn’t amazing, simply because I like to keep it all inside of AUM until I’m mixing. I’ve tried recording all my midi from AUM into Xequence and that is doable and works fine however I have a modular workflow and don’t really rely on timelines too much unless I’m mixing so that’s just me. I would totally recommend. Just wish the devs would at least let us use the keys and pads as AUv3s (sorry but your already available AUv3s for keys and pads are a bit outdated and buggy, it would be great for Xequence 2 to at least include those on the purchase, of not Xequence 2 being entirely AUV3). Update: giving this one 6 stars. I’ve been in contact with the developer because i had a few questions regarding use with BM3 and Elastic drums. Not only was he quick to respond, but even sent me an update to the elastic drums map in Xequence 2. He addressed each situation and all of my questions have been answered within a matter of days. It was as though I’m his only customer. This midi editor/sequencer has made my switch to ios for music complete. I thought a touch screen would make a piano roll easier than using a mouse, but quickly learned that that was not the case. Now, with Xequence 2, i can manipulate notes with ease, and in many cases its easier than the desk top. Thank you for making my life easier. Show more

This is not a DAW, it’s an ultimate composition tool! I used to hate editing midi, UI was just user-unfriendly and the process just too awkward for my taste and an instant creativity killer. Even on PC, clicking with a mouse, moving it left and right... The best platform for editing midi is definitely a touch screen device, because it greatly simplifies the physical and mental interaction. But of course an app has to make this happen. And not a lot do actually - Cubasis, BeatMaker and Auria, all have weak midi editors. This is where Xequence 2 differs. This app operates on a *very* intuitive level. Once I got Xequence 2, I just wanted to create more and more music. My creativity is the only bottleneck now (that and the iPad CPU) If you’re reading this and thinking, what is this app, it’s not a DAW? Do you need it if you already have a DAW? Well, the question is where do you compose/edit midi now, and are you happy with the overall experience, or do you think it could be better? Xequence totally nails midi creation and editing. I recommend this app to everyone, (including random people I meet on the street... sometimes). What makes it perfect is the way it separates actual movement and selection of the notes. It’s pretty much impossible to make a mistake of moving something you didn’t want to. Or deleting, or resizing, or changing velocity. And no you don’t have to tap on some button switch between these modes - all these are within the same mode. To create new notes you tap on the Draw icon, and while it’s active you can draw/delete notes. I tend not to use the Draw mode much, as once I have a few notes on the screen I just duplicate them and move around, it’s just as fast (this completely eliminates accidental deleting) So that covers the editing/creating, what about the actual tracks? Perfect there too! Slicing and moving tracks around uses the same idea - separation of moving things from selecting things. You can *not* accidentally move something while trying to select it. Precision. Whatever you want to do is made accessible most efficiently with next to zero room for error. Ability to loop only the sections from particular tracks is pure gold! Say you recorded a base line, like 4 bars on track one, 8 bars of drums on track two, and now want to lay down some piano on track three. Say you’re jamming or need a backing for the melody, so you don’t want to deal with copy-pasting all this a bunch of times (as you normally would in other DAWs). You just want to select those chunks from different tracks, hit loop, and have them loop indefinitely as you record one long piano track. One chunk can be 2 bars, another 10.. doesn’t matter, each will loop it’s own size! Once you’re happy with that piano track, you might want to revisit those other tracks, unloop one, add more content there, slice them copy paste, move parts etc. Xequence makes it super easy to edit all the other MIDI data just as easily. You can “tweak” the knobs by drawing bars on the screen essentially. I don’t have any hardware synths (anymore) but I would love to get me one now to control it with Xequence. If you’re wondering about routing MIDI in Xequence, personally, I use it exclusively with AUM or ApeMatrix. So I made one clean preset for AUM and one for ApeMatrix, mapped each MIDI channel saved it and that’s your init right there. After that you don’t need to go into the MIDI routing screen again. (Unless you want to do more advanced stuff on a channel, like when playing/recording via on-screen keyboard... you can assign anything to 3 sliders. You do that in MIDI routing screen). MIDI routing is actually made super-simple in Xequence, (To create those presets above, the steps literally are - select AUM, press ok, now hit “+” 15 times, mapping 16 channels is complete). Preset handling holds a very dear place in my heart. Folder creation, Save, Save As (with previous name in the box), renaming, yes... they are all here. Everything is perfectly organized. When I get some creative ideas I just pick up Xequence, load up ApeMatrix or AUM, and I’m ready to roll. If I can summarize this app in one sentence: Anything conceivable that can be done to MIDI, Xequence does it the best and fastest. Suggestions: Just one ;) Please put the toggle Metronome button always visible on the main screen. It’ll make the overall experience even more fluid. Show more

Whether using external hardware or iOS synths/apps, it doesn’t get much better than this app. Very easy to setup and once you get used to the workflow, which didn’t take too long, it was a breeze. Awesome dev! Show more

I got this app a while ago and was like oh cool it’s a sequencer that’s super super easy to use and super stable and has a generative MIDI thing but it was only until I actually BECAME a HARDCORE iOS musician that I was like oh whoa this thing is now a super super essential tool. I actually also find it super handy to link it with all my synthesizer apps and make infinite generative music for my study time. (I could go buy a generative MIDI app but I already spend $18 on this and it works fine.) So anyway - if you’re not a hardcore iOS studio artist (basically if you haven’t gotten to AUv3 or IAA or Virtual MIDI yet and are just working with GarageBand) you’ll find this app nice, but hard to integrate; it’s not until you expand your digital sonic horizons and get a pro DAW running that you’ll fully realize the potential of Xequence. This sequencer is a joy to use. I used version one and now version two and it is even better. The handles for moving and stretching clips is a really nice touch interface feature. It allows you to scroll the arranger view without accidentally moving a clip and to accurately edit clips. Show more

Xequence 2 simply the best midi recording, editing, and playback solution on iOS! It’s become the centerpiece of composing for me. I find the experience far superior to any of the several iOS DAW piano rolls and timelines I own - to the point that I do all my composing in Xequence 2 regardless of the app(s) making the sounds. You do need to know or learn the basics of connecting MIDI between apps, but you need that anyway. ;-) UPDATE: Since release the app has continually gotten even better. But I also want to say that, honestly, everyone I’ve recommended it to has been thrilled with it. Feedback is virtually all positive on the popular Audiobus forum as well. So, it’s not just me. The app is great. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing problems export midi to different apps. The exported midi seems to be out of sync. I hope this issue will be fix. So it will be compatible to other apps. Show more

This is my main space for composing on iOS. It’s a great linear timeline piano roll with lots and lots of little QOL improvements that show the dev really understands some of the challenges of producing audio on iOS. Very well done, thank you! Show more
