    Great, not perfect
Fantastic app, huge amount of room for creativity. Not the most stable app on iPad Pro 11 5th gen, sound disappears randomly and playback stops working. With this fixed and some added features (resampling) we would have possibly the best iOS audio tool imaginable. Show more

    Just one thing…
All I need is looping samples, so I can make my looping waveform oscillators. I got this app right when it came out, and I check on it every month or so. “Looping samples a thing yet? No? Ok…” I figured it had to be on the to-do list, but then again, maybe not. I can’t be the only one who wants this. We already have every other component we need for basic subtractive synthesis. This one feature would change everything… Show more

Fun DAW. Good for Learning, if a bit buggy
I love the design, feel, and idea surrounding the app. I’ve run into a bug or two that just kinda killed the fun aspect of music making though. I was trying to arrange beats within the sequencer, but due to my clumsiness, every time I tried to highlight a beat to delete it- I’d paste a new string of beats that I had copied prior. (That’s on me for not being familiar with the app). The bug occurred when I had tried deleting a line/pasting one too many times. The app crashed because I guess I overloaded it. When I reloaded it again, it crashed 2 more times consecutively. When I finally got to the pad with all the sounds, I found that all the sounds except the one I was ordering wasn’t working. Reloading the app and trying multiple pairs of headphones hasn’t worked. So I guess I gotta reload and edit the sounds again. That’s it for my complaints. Now for a positive light. The design of the app (I guess one could call it the User Interface) is so pretty! Seeing what others have made with the app is amazing as well. I’m learning so much by just messing around, it’s a good tool for learning DAWs and tweaking audio (is that called Audio Engineering?). It’s quite refreshing when I get to translate the rhythms from my head to a physical/digital space. Now I just gotta work on getting the voices out of my head alongside the music (That was joke! Please laugh… pls) Knowing that the app is still relatively new gives me hope for its future. Bugs and glitches are just part of the process! If you took the time to read this, please know that you should indeed try the app. I, for one, am looking forward to trying to make music and one day sharing my creations from sounds I capture. Watch out Koala, there is a new kid in town…
Let me just start by saying that I love sampling apps. I use them quite a bit for my own music production. I pretty much own all the major samplers: Samplr, Koala, Borderlands Granular, Chomplr and Segments just to name a few. I have been following Andrew Huang on YT for some time now as I am a big supporter of mobile music production and he is consistently producing quality videos that I find valuable. I think it is safe to say that, at the moment of writing this review, that Koala is the big kid in town. I use Koala quite a bit and am very happy with the Samurai update. That aside, I do find that there are several elements to sampling that Koala currently lacks. I find that Flip checks many boxes in this regard. I think that Koala is probably Flip’s most obvious competition. I live the advanced features that Flip brings to the table. The Automation feature is sooooooo great, and it is surprisingly deep (with automation quantize it adds so many possibilities). Andrew also added many small features that only someone who regularly produces music would notice and love (small things like being able to change the octaves of the on screen dual keyboards, etc). I love the simple layout, like Koala it is pretty easy to engage with, but is perhaps a little less user friendly than Koala ( but that can only be because of all of the extra features that Flip employs that Koala lacks). Flip is definitely still in its very early stages and lacks several elements that I think everyone would like to see: AUV3 integration, the ability to make 8-bar loops or larger, better sample organization (ability to make folders), resampling (for synth) and time-stretching to name a few. This being said, Flip is a very impressive first edition and Andrew Huang has made it very clear that his team plans on improving the app over time and making frequent updates. It seems clear to me that Flip is going to become a tool I use more and more of. Easy 5-stars from me. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for Flip. Show more

    Fun to use
I have had this for a while and it is full of glitches. Sometimes it works as it should, other times it doesn’t. It could be my phone and or my iPad, or it could be the app is glitchy. I was working on a project and for some strange reason, the metronome stopped working. Nothing helped. I reinstalled the app and now the metronome works again. There’s nothing worse than reading reviews of folks who have this app and it works seamlessly Show more

Dev was right - 1 star is a bit too harsh, but this is also a top 200 app so....
Even though I appreciate the updates that were mentioned (both recent and future), there was still no mention of auv3 support: Interapp audio is a deprecated protocol and I don’t really use interapp audio apps 99% of the time. Although some still do, most of us are moving away from those apps. I mean I know there’s reasons to go this route, perhaps the app is developed under a platform that won’t allow to build AUs... idk. Regardless, midi and and out plus interapp audio after over 7 months is still not much under this context, to be honest, especially considering the enormous success behind this app. Most musician-oriented apps nowadays come with midi in and out from release and also if anything look into auv3, not Interapp. Anyway, this is a good app if you don’t do music on your phone but do so on a DAW and just want something fun and quick to sketch stuff with. Or if you just wanna make something on the go as a sort of musician toy. Maybe export stems and keep building stuff later on your Mac / PC. Certainly not a 1 star as I had rated it before, my bad for being harshly I don’t use it anyway, cause it completely doesn’t fit with my iPad oriented workflow. maybe you will, (if you don’t use AUv3s most probably). You can definitely sketch some things here; in the end I’d rather use other apps as otherwise I’m stuck with the “ ‘you need to export these stems into a PC to finish this’ workflow”. Maybe it’ll fit into your workflow. Show more

    Good, could be great
Coming from someone who hates DAW’s usually, it’s nice to see one that’s so intuitive. I think Flip works best for capturing live sound an creating patterns and sequences from that. It’s much more difficult to take a sample of a song and loop it into the meter, though it’s not impossible. It also needs resampling. Seriously, just adding that would multiply the versatility of this app tenfold. Also finer control over the speed of the sample would be great, or some kind of way to loop a sample onto the timeline rather then just timing the triggers just right. Also a distortion or clipping effect for each track, like the chorus + delay and such. You can get a version of this with the ring modulater, but perhaps you could switch it out or something? Other than that, this app has a wealth of creativity for the user. I’m excited to see what people make with it. Show more

    Missing samples
I’m missing all of the stock samples, any fix to this? Update: pressing the restore button did not solve my problem. Any help?

Powerful, accessible and fun! However needs refinement and bug fixes
TL;DR: Dope, I recommend it, just hoping the devs will address the issues I’ve listed below. This is mainly a post for the devs! I love this app, I realize I've probably recorded more songs on it than any daw I use. It’s extremely fun to use and ACCESSIBLE which is its biggest strength! I try to recommend it to any friends who are into music and haven’t tried playing with a daw. Now comes the reason why I removed a star: the bugs and file management system. One of the bugs that has plagued me since launch was the app re-pitching my samples’ root note. This is a HUGE bug that can drastically disrupt workflow and I’m surprised it still hasn’t been fixed. It can derail a project due to the pitch shifts being random amounts, and extremely tedious to try and fix with the knobs especially if you didn’t know what the original pitch of the sample was to begin with. This isn’t exactly a bug but it’s a frustrating function of the app: when making MIDI changes to large groups of notes, UNDO-ing changes notes ONE BY ONE. If you choose to move a chord progression a quarter note over, have fun hitting the undo button 20 times. Flip also doesn’t feel extremely stable - I’ve had a fair share of crashes over the past couple of months, some harmless, others not. The file management is very limited, forcing users to scroll through a giant list of their past projects with ONLY alphabetical ordering. You can only import one sample at a time from within the app, and cannot create custom sample folders. Although there are workarounds to some of these problems if you go into the iOS Files app, I think that these quality of life features desperately need to be added. I really want this app to be the best out there! I genuinely love Flip and it’s made my musical experience so much more FUN! It’s just that these technical problems can get in the way. Godspeed devs! Latency
Got the app when it came out. I tried to push through latency issues on my iphone XR for a while.. but ended up putting it down for months. — Seems like w great app... Kinda unusable when every hit happens like .25 seconds later. Show more

    great for the price
it’s good it can do a lot of editing of samples before you actually get to make the beat, you can use samples from your files which is great, you can assign sounds to 9 separate pads, samples can be trimmed perfectly it’s a great app, obviously you’re not going to get studio quality audio effects but the samples will still sound good especially when you change parameters Show more

    So good.
This app is really great. UI is a little dated for 2021, but the functionality and flow is here. I also use Koala which is amazing and you should buy both, but this app allows for way easier sculpting of sound and much more in depth sequencing for building full tracks. One feature request, allow it to preview a sound before importing. If you download a ton of samples from Splice for example, they all have really long, really similar file names, so being able to preview the sound before assigning it to a pad (like you can on the 1010 blackbox) would be amazing. Fast, fun, easy to learn but lacks IAA integration
Really fun app, easy to use, and really appreciate the how-to videos from Andrew and the help overlay - other devs should take notes! Was glad to find an easy way to import my self-recorded samples out of the box. The one major drawback is that it doesn't work as InterApp Audio (or AUV3). Ableton Link is great for BPM, but that's about it - start stop was fidgity for me, and Volume on disconnected apps is tedious. With InterApp Audio it would integrate into my established workflow, easier levels management, post FX could be applied, even per-track FX if the tracks were blown out like in Pttrning2. If this can happen, it's a 5 star app for me. Without it, I fear it's going to sit idle in the dusty folder of standalone music apps. Show more

    Great but glitchy
Super fun to play with and slowly learning the interface Is there a known bug where the app will just stop playing the audio for the track or samples you are working on? It says its playing, but its not. Occasionally plays one or two of the samples. Does this one on phone and iPad.I even click out of the song im working on and sometimes other sounds will work, but sometimes not. Really frustrating when you're getting into a groove and the app Stops playing back your creations. Show more

AudioShare update is a game changer!
Love the AudioShare integration. Game changer! I’ve successfully made samples in other apps, chopped em in AudioShare, and loaded them into Flip all on my iphone7! Loving the new Rachel Collier sample pack as well. Thanks for all the updates based on suggestions. You guys are listening! Show more

Totally gives GarageBand a run for the doe, and is right up there with Maschines app! Love the simplicity and ease of access approach to creating samples! Keep up the great work mannnnne! Also VERY affordable in app pack downloads! Very humble and jaw dropping app! ???? Show more

    Why Why why
Why Is this not an inter app or audio unit, the makers of this app know the importance of these features.

    Absolutely unusable!!
I was very excited to try this out but can’t perform even the simplest tasks, due to the ridiculous delay I get when I hit any pads. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I doubt it because I followed RKC on youtube and tried to duplicate her steps, only difference being that I’m using the built in samples - it’s absolutely impossible!! I’m trying to run this on an iPad Pro 12.9”, 3rd Generation with iPadOS 14.4 Show more
