    buy it
i’ve bought almost all of the midi keyboard apps currently available and i want to tell every perspective buyer that this one blends with real instruments (acoustic guitars, bass, drums) better than ANY of the high dollar synth apps out there and for a small fraction of the price. seriously, hundreds of dollars spent and this is the app that i end up using over and over when it’s time to add “keyboards” to human made music. buy it Show more

Not a DX7, but close enough.
This app is really good for anyone wanting to add basic FM sounds to their mix. It has a few DX algorithms that allow you to tweak and alter the preset sounds to get some really strange effects. And it's got those thumping DX synth basses for hip-hop and EDM. The sound isn't as smooth and polished as you would get from a real DX, never mind Native Instruments FM8 or the Synclavier V. It reminds me more of the CZ1 from Casio or the Volca FM from Korg. Still, other than Casio's iCZ, this is the best FM/ PD synth app out there. Show more

Overall the best 4 Operator FM synth for iOS
Don't get me wrong, I still like FM4. However, DXi would get a fifth star if it had an LFO separate form the Mod Wheel and detuning features. Pitch envelopes would be nice too. While the FM4 has the advantage of LFOs, different sound engines, more flexible settings, and an arpeggiator, it suffers from being abandoned. DXi has the advantage of being more up-to-date, being universal, it sounds just as good, option to turn off anti-aliasing, a true sequencer, better MIDI (I assume), full control of pitch in ratio or fixed mode, more pleasing interface, etc. Show more

Hands down the easiest FM synth on iOS
I'm really glad the developer keeps providing support to this little jewel of a synth. Comparing this app with it's closer adversaries (FM4, TX7, iYM2151) DXi still wins. I'll tell you why: DXi has the easiest way to fiddle with FM parameters via the ADSR screen. Also, DXi has a recorder, MIDI capable, ACP and Audiobus ready, making it easy to integrate to your sonic arsenal. I'm still hoping for the capability of opening SYX files from old FM synths like the 4-OP Yamaha TX81Z. That would make this app the king FM synth to have. Show more

    Good.
I like this synth. Many great, unique sounds. Works well with Cubasis. Great bells and pads.

Love it! How about Audiobus Effects support?
DX7 owner & guitar player here; I love this app! First: I appreciate not having to get out of my chair to play the DX7. Second: I think I could learn more about FM synthesis from this app than I ever could from standing at the DX7. Lastly, I wonder if you'd consider adding Audiobus Effects support? I'd love to play my guitar through my DXi … thanks again. Show more

Great start, but needs more keyboard features
This does work with a midi controller, but does not work with a sustain pedal. I had a DX100 years ago with four operators, and had a lot of fun programming it. This is a great start, but the keyboard could use some improvement, like the ability to make the keys bigger, and also a mono mode for the lead presets. Add that, and a midi event editor, and I will give it five stars. As a final note, there should be an option to toggle the slide function on the keyboard as it makes it next to impossible to do ascending glissando rolls. I would also like to point out that this is a limited version that does not include poly/ mono switch, no pitch bend range, no portamento, no speed control for the LFO filter wave forms, which are also incomplete, as there is no sample & hold or sample & hold x8. Although there is a white noise filter. This is not a true DX7 emulation, or it would have 6 operators instead of 4. There should also be 12 algorithms, but there appears to be only about 6. The ADSR on each operator should also have five points instead of four, although they do work well. One star off my earlier rating until an update comes out that includes the missing features. That being said, it's still not a bad app for free. Show more

A great app at an unreal price for what your getting...
I primarily am a singer/songwriter/guitarist but have played many other instruments as well (bass, started on drums in 6th grade band and still play, etc.). Keys have always fascinated me but aside from adding crochet piano chords and pads on demos I really didn't get into them. Over the last 5 years I have been reading up, playing more and generally digging the various synths, electric pianos and organs I have been lucky to play. The iPad opened serious doors though because I could now try several different synths, etc. without buying more sound modules, electric pianos, controllers or VST's. My Novation controller into my interface and boom, I can enjoy tons of different sounds. I have went pretty crazy with the app purchases but with so many cool ones out there (and yes there is lots of crap too) I have a hard time not trying them when they go for a cup of coffee or less. DXi here is a great example of high quality sounds available for penny's on the dollars that they're worth. DXi has such a streamlined and easy to program interface that getting sounds and experimenting happens very quickly. The sequencer is a great touch as well as the .wav recorder. That recorder is great for skipping Audiobus and making a great loop or tone inside the app, recording it with the DXi recorder, export for more editing and mangling in an editor or DAW and then bring it to the project your working on or begin a new one with the idea as a great jumping off point. I can see whole songs getting their genesis from some experimenting with this app, the vibe and sounds are that good... Although most reviews are positive, I feel DXi is underated or at least a hidden gem. This app belongs in any iPad music makers toolbox regardless of the genre they lean to. Great work by the dev and it shows he cares by the steady updates over the course of a few years. Show more

Best way to learn to use fm
This is the synth Yamaha should have released first! An awesome fm synth interface! Wow ! I love how it shows you what the operators are doing and how fast or slow they are moving and how the envelopes affect the modulation! Awesome interface ! Bravo! Peace christo Show more

    Authentic DX sound
Sounds much more like a real Yamaha DX than its rival FM4. And far easier to program than a real one too!

    Amazingly simple yet deep
Finally came to understand how FM synthesis works by playing with this app's ASDR envelopes. That simple an app. But all the presets sound awesome too. And the MIDI implementation is perfect for me and my iconnect midi+4 Show more

    Producer
Excellent. Thank you for all your efforts in producing such a fine recreation of the FM sound. Very user friendly, and great sounds.

    great FM / DX sound!
Holy cow, this is the one to get. Simple and straightforward, amazing classic sounds, .. Worth every iCent ;)

    Quick and smooth
If you ever wqnted a crystal-clear synth sound with quick response this is a great app. FM synthesis can be a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it you can get all kinds of liquid-smooth gradients and overtones. Really good with virtual MIDI, it's my go-to app when I need a quick bass line or key stab. Show more

    Exceptional all the way round!!
If you like the sounds that one can make with this form of FM synthesis and you use iOS for any audio activities you need this app. I've had it since it was released and it's creator continually updates this app for each iOS release as well as performance enhancements. Seriously good app and my respect to Takahashi-San!! Show more

I highly recommend this app. Great for playing songs from the album Back In The High Life by Steve Winwood.
