Why is Apple allowing this App?
Like many other people, I have bought BitPerfect and DSD Master, at a cost of $40, only to find out that the apps are unuseable. BitPerfect crashes continually, usually after just one or two tracks. DSD Master is thus also rendered useless. I have emailed support twice, several days apart, but have received no response whatever. Searching the internet, countless others have the same problems. It seems that the developer is no longer maintaining or supporting these products. However, they are still taking money for them and Apple is selling them. Show more

Well it used to be better
It seems that with each version of OS X that Apple releases, BitPerfect suffers. I'm running the most recent version of BitPerfect on two different Macs running Mojave (MacBook Air, MacBook Pro) and experience frequent crashes, cannot get gapless playback, and integermode only works with 1 of my 3 different DACs. It doesn't feel like the developer is still supporting this App. That's too bad. I guess they are spending the time on their new DSD app. IDK. Show more

    Crashes constantly
No apparent way to contact developer. Newst version (and previous ones) crash under Mojave. I'd give it 5 stars if I could get some support. Have crash logs. Show more

Great App but broken in iTunes 12.9.5.5
**UPDATE** The app is not working with iTunes 12.9.5.5. I suspect this has to do with the upcoming move to the Music app for MacOS. This is for those who wish iTunes played source files with matching sampling rate and bit depth, usually with output to a USB, Firewire, or perhaps Optical-based DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). Its not going to make the Mac's analog output significantly better, except by bypassing much of the CoreAudio processing. Don't expect miracles unless you're using an outboard converter. That said, its a great bargain and infinitely useful. Show more

    Crashes way too often
While I love BitPerfect, on Mojave it crashes quite frequently when just playing, it will quit itself and the music often keeps playing anyway but with no sound. It needs to be updated. Show more

Worthless if you listen to any classical, jazz, live albums - & awful customer service
BitPerfect is unable to handle gapless playback -- which means if you listen to any of the following: * Live albums * Any music with suites (classical, jazz, opera, etc) * Any music where tracks segue into each other It is completely useless because it inserts a gap in between every song. Customer service is also atrocious. I contacted them asking about these issues; they never even bothered to reply. Show more

    iTunes Keeps Crashing
Once I installed BitPerfect iTunes started crashing. Guess that’s $10 down the drain.

Cheap, simple and does the job (plus its fun to experiment with)
Let’s start with the basics, most computers mess with the digital bits for various reasons i wont get into. But that beautiful 16-bit CD quality file you play may b 12, 13, 14 bits when it gets to an outboard DAC for high fidelity reproduction. Bit-perfect is the term for various methods to eliminate this mucking around and deliver the original bits (plus sometimes a bit more). There are many commercial solutions that provide an integrated player, library, browsing mechanism, etc. JRiver, Audirvahna, ROON, etc.) But a) all are fairly costly and b) all replace iTunes. This little GEM simply hijacks the output from iTunes and delivers it to a device of your choice - the internal DAC, an external USB DAC, etc. It will also do some digital signal processing like upsampling if you so choose. Its $10 and it works. End of review. I design high end commercially as an avocation (side business) and have a very revealing system. It works just great. I also really enjoy the ability to play with upsampling or not, and with other options and see IF they make a difference and HOW MUCH. Nothing like research ….. I will caution you that either it or maybe MacOS can get confused. Often, if you have been playing anything elsewhere, and you walk up and connect to your mondo DAC int he sound room, it may be funky. The first time i connected it showed connected to internal sound, while sound poured out of my speakers, clearly fed by my external DAC. Huh? And that sound was awful. A restart of bit-perfect and iTunes, after disconnecting and re-connecting the USB device solved that pronto. Its also smart enough to do more deterministic upsampling in integers, rather than the convoluted math necessary for 44.1 —> 96 kHz upsampling. For the price, i think its a great bargain, adn Windoze and Linuzxusers all wish they could get it now doubt. Show more

    Works Great When Not Crashing
Love the app when its working. It crashes pretty consistently on High Sierra. Please update the app! Has the developer abandoned it?

    Great — simple but effective
This app does one fairly simple thing, but it does it surprisingly well. Despite all the verbiage on the developer’s website, basically this app just matches the sample rate used by iTunes to the sample rate of whatever music you have, preventing resampling before music gets to your DAC or sound card. It gets the little details right. For example, if it can’t access a track, it lets iTunes play it at whatever sample rate you had set before it started. When it’s not doing anything, it resets the sample rate to default, like it should. It also offers a few useful options, e.g., it can invert polarity for all tracks or just for tracks you specify in iTunes comments. Show more

    Incompatible with Mohave?
I used to enjoy this app a lot, but now that I've updated to Mohave, EVERY SINGLE TIME I open it, it prompts me to search my iTunes library, which it does for five minutes before I can use it or iTunes. Huge PITA. Show more

Great sound, but crashtastic under High Sierra
This is an excellent idea with some execution issues. I keep mostly 16/44.1 ALAC files ripped from CDs (yes, those still exist!) on my machine, but recently a few artists have released direct to digital at higher depth/sampling rate (mostly 24/48). The problem is that iTunes is kind of dumb about this and resamples the 48kHz down to 44.1 unless you go change it in Audio MIDI setup, and then you have to change it back to listen to something else. Ugh. BitPerfect solves this problem, and does seem to subtly alter playback in general, though I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes with the regular 16/44.1 content. One thing I *LOVE* about this is that it forces iTunes to go through my optical digital out while letting every other app just use my standard computer speakers. I know other people treat this as a bug, but as far as I’m concerned, this is an amazing feature. I’ve wanted that for years, and have been really missing it since the old utility I used for this (Detour) died. I hope if this issue is “fixed” for other users, it is at least left as an option for those of us who want it. So, if it’s so great, why only 2 stars? Unfortunately while BitPefect addressed a lot of earlier issues, it does NOT play well with High Sierra. Causes iTunes to crash constantly. Dev has no idea why and just points the finger at Apple. While I readily acknowledge that the problem is likely Apple’s, the fact remains that the crashing is so frequent it makes this nigh-unusable. Even it if is Apple’s fault, the fact remains that this isn’t worth your $10 if you’re running High Sierra because it’s a constant crasher. It’s unfortunate. Show more

    not recommended.
compressed and irritating. no idea why audiophile recommant this. Itune sound more define than this does…listen through my studio monitors and much difference in dynamics.

    Is Causing Itunes to Crash
When it works, the software does what it is supposed to for the most part. Problems: Itunes randomly crashes at least once every 2 days when software is in use. Sometimes both itunes and this software will just freeze. Also, bits if songs will go into a loop and you have reset I/O rates on the software. Finally, there is some intermittent skipping. So, it’s not perfect. Show more

    Gapless Playback Not Supported
While BitPerfect does improve sound and makes for an overall smoother audio playback, it does not support gapless playback. I experience interruptions between tracks. Therefore, I hesitate before activating it.

    Huh?
I can’t tell any difference. Is this a joke? Soundstage? EQ? I have no idea what this thing actually does, but it’s zilch. Nothing.

    What an Improvement!
I am a professional musican and college music professor. I have been using a pair of Audioengine A5+ Bamboo speakers on my desk along with their D1 DAC, a huge improvement over the sound coming out of my 2017 iMac 27” headphone jack. However I was looking to squeeze more out of my system in terms of sound stage, instrument separation, and clarity of all the moving lines. I played with upsampling which I found to be detrimental to most of my lossless files so I went back to the native rates. Then I read about this program and for the price figured I would give it a shot and I have to say I have been super impressed. It was almost the diffence between onboard audio and using the DAC. With the DAC and this software my music has taken on another level of interest for me. The D1 isn’t the most high end DAC but this software really helped to elevate the who setup. I went to the instruction manual and looked at what all the settings did and all of their recommended things to do were not set at install so I went through and made sure I ticked the right boxes and left the stuff alone they said to. READ THE MANUAL to get the most from this software. I also haven’t had any audio popping with my DAC since using this software. I am using with High Sierra (Beta 10.13.3 Beta (17D34a)) and it’s working fine. iTunes does crash on occasion but that may be the beta version of High Sierra contributing but it’s worth it for the improved sound quality. Re-Writing my Review about DSD Files as it was DELETED
I am not sure how or why my previous review was deleted, but that’s pretty strange. Shortly after I changed it to two stars, it disappeared. So here’s my new and updated review: Bitperfect is great if you want to use iTunes to play back your DSD files over a DSD capable DAC. Unfortunately, it’s only 1/4 of the product. You also need to purchase the much more expensive DSD Master to achieve this. This also requires re-processing all your files to “hybrid-dad” files. The downside? Well, for me, many of the converted songs were not recognized by bitperfect as DSD. They would play back as PCM. I tried to get support for this, but after an initial answer and uploading some sample music files, I was never answered. Now bitperfect is also randomly crashing during playback. Not just for DSD files but for ALAC files as well. I finally gave up trying to use it. I updated my previous five star review to reflect these changes, and my review suddenly disappeared. I have since discovered Audirvana, and my search ended immediately. It handles my lossless files (all tyes) easily. It supports AU plugins (EQ, etc.), and many other features, and it also integrates directly with iTunes. I keep hoping there will be a bitperfect update that will fix stability issue for me, at which time I will update my rating again. Show more

    BIG IMPROVEMENT!
I’m really impressed with BitPerfect. The sound is much better - cleaner, warmer - better. Great job!

BitPerfect - An Audiophile’s iTunes Savior
What a huge leap in iTunes sound quality! When my wife came into the sound room she was asking if I had purchased a new component. It was nice to say that the change she heard was coming from an under $10 purchase. I became aware of BitPerfect while reading a column in Paul McGovern’s (owner of PS Audio) blog. Wow I thought music produced by my system sounded good but once I added the BitPerfect application, I was in audio nirvana. The changes through my electrostatic speakers was way more than I expected - much improved soundstage in depth, transient response, and musicality. I tried a much more expensive player several years ago and must say that BitPerfect hits a homer! I am using it in Integer mode and understand that the application is a” hog" but it is worth the trade-off. Since my iTunes is stored on a NAS I make sure to disable BitPerfect when it is not in use so I can do other functions on the NAS. Kudos to the developer…thanks for allowing my system to “sing” musicality! Show more
