    Novices
Most of this information could be had on the Internet for free the prices unjustifiably high for such little content I'm trying to figure out how to get a refund now Show more

    Fantastic textbook!
I can't wait to read the next one.

    So much potential
Paid for a deep detailed course, but got only a detailed intro instead. Very easy to understand and follow, however the content barely covers what I already knew about music. The teaching style used in the app has so much potential and I'm very disappointed that it didn't last longer. Show more

    Five-star content!
The instructional value of this app is great: it really clarified some stuff I was vague on, especially the melody sections. Very innovative presentation: looking forward to trying some of their other tools. 4 stars instead of 5 because it crashed a few times on my iPad mini when starting a sound clip, but always worked after re-opening, so that's a minor hassle. The best!
I learned more in the few days I spent going through this app than I did in years of trying and failing to learn an instrument, taking classes, and reading books about theory. It breaks it down so simple it almost makes me mad at all the teachers and books that make it so hard when it doesn't have to be. I've actually decided to give the piano and songwriting another shot because I finally understand it. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn theory, any instrument, or songwriting. I wish I could have had this years ago. Show more

    Good intro, over priced
I wouldn't pay more than 4 dollars for a very basic intro to music theory app. Lacks interactivity.

    Not a good value
I feel like I paid for a book but received a pamphlet. All the information is great, but for the money, it should do more than scratch the surface.

    Overpriced
There isn't nearly enough content in here to justify the price but what is here is solid.

Great Way to Learn Music Theory
I really like the way Hooktheory presents music theory in a simple and colorful manner. Separating music into chords and melody is a good and simple way to organize it. I think the book should go more in depth for the price you pay for it. The book doesn't go into advanced inversions, applied chords, or the 7 musical modes. I like the popular examples of music theory presented. Overall a great service, but the book needs to catch up with hookpad. Show more

Best music theory course for beginners!
I've struggled for a long time to understand music. Without much background I've learned specific formulas to write chord progressions and harmonies that sound good. There is a science to writing melodic hooks that get stuck in everyone's head and this book teaches it! Show more

    Great practical knowledge
Finally, a music theory primer for the common person! Greta app.

    I expected a lot more
it isn't enough material to justify it's premium price. I would not recommend.

Amazing way to learn chords and melody
I never rate apps but this one is amazing. If you want to learn in plain and simple language how pop songs are created this is probably the easiest way I can think of. Show more

No wonder they call it "Hook"Theory
** I'm Hooked, no doubt! ** It's like they carved out the bottom of a boat and said, "here put this under all that other stuff you know so you can actually sail your songwriting vessel into the hearts and minds of adoring fans." I think I hear a melody in there, gotta' go write a song... Thanks HookTheory! Show more

    Sound Font Woes
I've only just started reading, so I can't say much about the content of the book (from what I've read so far it seems to be solid though). One thing that immediately stood out to me was that the sound font/sample/synth used in the examples is really, reeeally cheap sounding. It reminds me of something you would hear in DOS era computer games. It would be less distracting if they were replaced with something nicer. I know this is a nitpick, but when the rest of the book looks so nice and sleek, it's a little jarring to hear something so old and ugly. I realize this may not be possible from a time/effort perspective since it looks like you hard-rendered them into QuickTime files and redoing it could take too long, but I would immediately bump my review up to a 5 if that was fixed. : ) Show more

    Awesome!
Great job. Short. To the point. Clear. Very impressed with the explanations. Would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to understand how music works.
