    Update to previous review
I had some initial problems with a ton of noise but figured out that it's the midi sync button that seems to be receiving some kind of sequencer residue (?) but once that was turned off this synth rawks!! I have very little spare time right now so programming is going to be very sketchy but what I've seen and heard so far tells me that this is going to be great!! Show more

    Instant Classic iOS Synth
The fact that a synthesizer on iOS from virSyn is excellent is hardly "news" - they have an excellent lineup including Addictive Synth, microTera, and Cube Synth. But the "Tera Synth" might just be the most powerful and versatile of them all. That virSyn was able to get this much content (900+ presets out of the box, plus a randomizer button) into a 10MB app file is astounding. And, of course, it pairs with all of the key features you would want in an iOS synth, including AudioBus, IAA, ACP, and Core/Virtual MIDI compatability. The keyboard and arppegiator in Tera should be familiar to you from the other virSyn apps, and they are excellent. The keyboard can be set (easily) to a variety of keys and modes so you can "never play a wrong note". Unless I'm missing it, I do sort of which the keyboard had a hold and drag option a la Sunrizer and other synths, but no touchscreen keyboard will ever be perfect. MIDI control works as it needs to. Let me admit first that I'm not a huge synth expert, let alone a MODULAR synth expert. I'm not well-versed in how you put together different modules and filters to produce a given sound. But with Tera, you don't even have to be. We're talking an ASTOUNDING level of preset content here. The "Bass" section alone has the content of probably 4 other apps, ranging from pounding sub basses, to Moog-style synth, to punchy percussive notes. And, of course, it can all be tweaked if you learn how to work the controls. The lead sounds are also very diverse, but I should give a shout out to the percussion presets, which pleasantly surprised me. This thing has dozens of synthesized kicks, snares, toms, and hats in the percussion bank, and some of them are surprisingly good. They are also pitch controllable with the keyboard, so you could literally do a multi-track song with lead, bass, and rhythm and never have to leave the app. This isn't the first or only modular synth to offer percussive sounds, but this was the best I've seen so far. Not sure if the $10 price is an intro price or permanent, but even at double that, this one is an absolute winner. I was tempted to go on a binge and buy some other synths at the same time, but having bought Tera Synth, there's no need. This review is of the version 1.0 release, so there are some rough edges (mostly just things like text hanging over the edge of buttons), but virSyn apps are generally well supported and I expect it will get the attention it needs. Instantly one of my favorite iOS synths, and as much as I like AudioBus, the IAA compatible ones tend to get used a lot for the sake of convenience. Note: My device is an iPad 2. Tera Synth is certainly within the capabilities required to run on an older device, but at times, faster note passages may result in clicking. I find that AudioBus is superior in this sense because if you increase latency to 512 frames, the audio quality issues almost always disappear. Newer devices, I expect, should run this app just fine. Yummy
This is rapidly becoming one of my top sweetheart iOS synths. So many different forms of synthesis and filters available, the ability to route them flexibly, not to mention the multi-segment envelopes, great FX, and kick butt arpeggiator - Tera can cover a huge sonic pallete. I like the clean interface too. Virsyn definitely did their work making this touch friendly. I'm hooked. This is possibly more addictive than Addictive synth! Show more

Hands down my fav iOS synth
900 presets, modular noodling and excellent effects all add up to an experience that feels virtually limitless in terms of sonic creativity. If you've wanted to dabble with modular synthesis this is the perfect place to start. 10/10 Show more
