    This program severely fell off
I’ve been using flat since 2018. It used to be a fair enough program that let you write music relatively freely. But in recent years the overall quality has dropped significantly and this is for three main reasons: Reason #1, the membership. As with most programs, a premium membership is offered. There used to be no problem with this membership, it would unlock some decent features and instruments with a higher quality MIDI, no complaints there. But then I don’t know if the developers became money hungry or what, but you practically have to have the membership now for this app to be practical in any sense. Here is only a small list of features locked away behind the membership: -The entire pitched percussion section -The entire percussion section, minus a drum set which doesn’t even have all of the sounds of a drum set -Swing time -The bari sax and bass clarinet, two very common instruments -the ability to edit your exports. This includes layout, measure sizes, and other such things -The ability to print individual parts -Multi-measure rests, one of the most basic aspects of music This is one of the least user friendly apps when it comes to writing literally anything other than a simple tune. And if you do print something out for free, be ready for problem #2: the printing. If you want to print something for free, be prepared to have watermarks absolutely everywhere and for the score to eat up all of your ink since the default setting fits maybe 4-6 lines on one page. And that’s if you’re printing only one part. If you want to print multiple at once (which you’ll have to do anyways since it doesn’t let you print individual parts for free), be ready to have a bible’s worth of pages. And even if you buy the membership, which could resolve the previous issues, you’re still hit with reason #3 for this app’s decline in quality; the performance issues. The performance has been an issue even before the membership. If you use this app, expect lag, random refreshes, the program not letting you select certain notes inexplicably, unresponsive buttons, and straight up crashing if you dare to make a score bigger than 4 parts or longer than 150 measures. The updates say they fix bugs and improve performance, but in 4 years these problems have gone completely unresolved. And if you think you can bypass these issues by going on the browser version, you’ll be severely disappointed. Now that musescore 4 is out, you honestly shouldn’t even bother with flat. Yes, it offers some features that musescore doesn’t, but the list is so small that it honestly doesn’t matter. The big one is collaborative scores, which sure, musescore doesn’t have, but it’s not like collaborative scores even work that well. They’re even glitchier and laggier than a regular score. I just hope that this app takes a turn for the better soon before musescore 4 makes it completely obsolete. Show more

A music writing app that’s real
This is by far the most comprehensive and useful notation program for iOS. I’ve looked for good music writing software for my phone for some time, and I was grateful to discover it. Doesn’t seem to pivot when I rotate the phone. It would be great if it worked with the accelerometer. Show more

Overall a really good app. Has a good selection of instruments, even without premium (although it would be great if baritone sax was one of the default instruments). It is easy to use. The only things that are weird are the instrument volume and the glissandos. Show more

    Suggestions
I’m a beginner at this (iOS) but I’ve written several songs that I’m quite proud of on this app. I have noticed several issues and bugs and also some missing aspects. There are functions that don’t seem to do anything at all. Slurs, scoops, fall-offs… they don’t seem to do anything to create jazzy effects (and I was really hoping to write some jazz with these elements). As far as what’s missing… I would love be able to create a nice growl on a trumpet along with something that mimics the effect of a plunger mute. I would also love to see a whammy bar option for the electric guitars. One more annoying issue than anything… when I export my songs into my files the balance goes way out-of-whack. Either that or the audio playback settings on the app aren’t correct. Also I don’t notice a lot of change in volume between different dynamics. I hope this brings it to someone’s attention. Show more

Please get this app AMAZING customer support service!
Ok so I lost my music, after I spent a solid 10 hours on a couple of pieces (I would have but with the AMAZING OUTSTANDING system that is very easy to use, I took half the time!!!.) I forgot to create an account before I started composing, so it was on a guest account. I created it, and everything was gone! So I contacted them. I come home from school the next day, AND ALREADY HAVE A RESPONSE! THEY FIXED IT!!! I went to my account, and surely enough, IT WAS ALL THERE!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH ?????????????? I AM SO HAPPY RN TYSM Show more

    Worse with time
I’ve used this app for about a year, And I can’t help but get disgusted with it. I’ve tried other apps, and this is the best I could find. Unfortunately, it just seems to get worse and less user friendly with each update. Maybe I’m going nuts, or the developers have a screw loose, or something. Show more
