Interval Ear Trainer

Every musician should work on Ear Training (or Aural Training) and Interval Ear Training is a very important element of ear training. To put it very simply, you will learn to recognise the relationship between two notes (by distance), when they are played together or apart! There are two types of interval listening, harmonic and melodic. In harmonic intervals the notes are played at the same time and in melodic the notes are played one after the other. Easy to remember: Melodic Intervals make melody, Harmonic Intervals make harmony! Many of you will probably want to understand how the names are found and how to work out the interval note names in every key. For this info you probably want to check out my ebook Practical Music Theory (available from justinguitar.com) which will explain all the theory related to this. This app deals specifically with Interval Ear Training, both melodic and harmonic. It will start very easy and gradually get harder as you get more correct and can pass each stage. You can choose from Piano or Guitar Input for your answers, and you can chose to hear the notes and guitar or piano. Personally, I'd recommend getting used to both. In "Training Mode" you can select specific intervals to work on if you are struggling with just specific intervals or types of interval. I'm sure you'll find this app very helpful, all you need to add is practice time! Best wishes, Justin

    So unintuitive
Aweful. I gladly pay for apps, but this was just a donation that turns me away from Justin Guitar. Wasted time trying to figure it out, text information is bad. Video was worse! Show more

    Phenomenal app.
Interval training at will and on the go without the need for an instrument. The ability to customize your own training regimen allows you to focus on specific problem areas. The app is a bargain for the price, same as almost anything Justin offers on his website. If you are looking for a serious and easy to use ear training app this one is for you. Show more

Read this if you need help!
When I initially opened the app I was confused on what to do. (I’m a slow minded individual lol) Here’s how to work the app- Level 1: Begin on the screen with the fretboard. Play the sound and decide if it’s a 4th or 5th interval. Choose your answer by either selecting the 4 or 5. If you picked correctly the button will turn green. If incorrect it will flash red. Eventually, once you answer enough correctly it will move you on to the next level. I highly recommend going over to Justin guitars website and learning ear training before attempting this. It is a frustrating and rewarding experience to learn! ? I’ve only gone up to the second level but I will update if anything changes on the app. Have a wonderful day! -Viv Show more

    Good Idea, Poorly Designed
Some may find use in this app, but as a novice I think it’s too difficult and it only gets harder. After almost every question, it switches up the key and octave. There is no option to limit keys or octaves. This confused me. After using the app for 12 hours, I was convinced that I was tone deaf. Level one (easiest) starts off by playing a root note then another note and asks you to guess the second note played, which is either a perfect fourth or fifth. Those are, in my opinion, the two hardest notes to identify in the major scale because they’re the furthest notes from the roots. It should have started off with R, 2, 3, 6, 7, Octave all in one key; instead it does exactly the opposite of this. I have a few other gripes as well, but if these two problems were fixed I probably would have been satisfied with my purchase. I downloaded another app which was free and it’s infinitely better. It starts off in C major with options for R, 2, 3, & 4. I learned more in 10 minutes with that app than I did in a week with this one. Turns out I’m not dumb, this app is. The only person who would benefit from this is someone with a great ear or a masochist. Unfortunately I do not have a great ear which is why I bought this app in the first place. It’s too bad, I really wanted to like it, but for my purposes it’s totally useless. If anyone is interested the other app is called Functional Ear Trainer. It’s terrific. Show more

    Great way to train
I’m really enjoying training my ear with this app. My only suggestion thus far is to add an option, perhaps only in training mode, to replay a missed interval. When I miss one I find myself wanting to hear it again so that I can train my ear properly. Show more

    Amazing but One Important Problem!
I really love this app..this is amazing and a necessity for my training. I can’t thank you enough. However there is one problem, on the descending 4th and 5th intervals I think it is wrong. If the starting note is on the 5th fret, 4th string...the 4th interval should be on the 3 fret, 3 string... while the 5th should be the 5th fret, 3 string. I think it is wrong on the app and opposite. Please fix this if it is broken, because it will screw up people’s hearing in the future. Show more

I ~love~ Justin but this app is garbage
This has zero internal documentation and it took me half an hour to understand what it even meant. Just a poorly devised app.

    Tip for beginner ears
As i was finding this app difficult at first since it changes key with every question, i found if you take your guitar and find the interval on the fret board and compare it to the surrounding intervals to really hear the difference in pitches, this has been an amazing way to kill multiple birds with one stone, you familiarize yourself with the fretboard, understand scale construction and of course train your ear. No instructions on how to use!
I purchased this app because I love Justin’s guitar course. But can’t figure out how to use it. Every link I try to get usage info is either dead or just tells me how great the app is without any instructions. Very frustrating!! Show more
