Octavian Pro is the Swiss Army knife of music theory apps! Featuring 550+ scales and 100+ chords, with deep options for viewing, listening, and cross-referencing, Octavian is the ultimate reference, learning, and teaching tool. Essential for all musicians, students, composers, and songwriters! As seen in Keyboard Magazine (Jan 2010): "It's a cheat sheet no keyboardist should leave home without." • SCALES - 550+ scales from around the world and through history. View any scale with any root note, in any mode, and examine the chords and harmony within the scale. • CHORDS - 100+ chords including sevenths, elevenths, ninths, thirteenths. Invert chords and browse scales that include the chord. • PROGRESSIONS - Compose 12-step chord progressions, with inversions, transposition, and added sevenths for each step. • MODULATION - Find pivot chords for the current scale and discover possible modulation destinations for each scale degree. • DICTIONARY - Enter notes on the keyboard to find the scales and chords that contain the notes! • DISPLAY - Configure the note labels to show notes, intervals, degrees, steps, or solfège (iPad only). • PLAYBACK - Choose tempo, octave, and repeat options for 12 high-quality instrument sounds to suit ear training, practice, or just hearing new harmonies. A video tutorial is available at http://www.bitnotic.com/octavian.html

Versatile but lacking some practical tools
    1. Needs in-app manual or at least on-demand wizards 2. Needs way to save notes, chords and progressions you play and to output this as midi file 3. Would also be nice to output midi from within app Aside from that, get ready for a voyage of discovery. Show more

    Love the new update
Glad to be able to use this app again. If you can make an option to have dictionary mode play individual note sounds as we touch/add them that would be handy. Thanks! Show more

    Even Better sheesh!
I was so upset when I updated to iOS 11 and couldn’t use this app. :( I was wondering what the heck is taking them so long to update??, My apologies... I’m not even mad anymore. they were simply making things even better. Bravo Team! Freakin Bravo! Show more

Awesome! Great if interested music theory
Sound is working just fine people! Not sure why the review says that. EXCELLENT APP exactly what anyone who knows music theory would want if learning piano. Very few people don't learn both together so this app was perfect for me. If you don't already know music theory this app might not help you but if you know it or are learning it you really couldn't ask for much more. I plug in my MIDI iRig iPhone keyboard and chord away! If you want an app that stays out of the way but isn't missing any detail this is it. Show more

    iOS 7 no sound
Really loved this app, but sound is broken with iOS7, can't wait for an update. Thanks for your awesome app, it's brought me a lot of inspiration!

    Works fine in iOS 6.1
As another reviewer wrote, it's "encyclopedic". I certainly have not tried everything, but so far it's an excellent reference tool. Working fine for me in iOS 6.1. I also found the developer to be very responsive. The UI could probably use refinement, but it gets the job done. The About and Help being tucked behind the Scale/Progression/Dictionary button was not obvious, but I found them. For $3 it's a dynamic reference tool for all but the most accomplished music scholar.
