Tonaly has been the perfect tool for me to start messing around with chords. I’m fairly new to music theory but this app makes it really simple and quick to navigate. The UI is really clean and works perfectly. For anyone wondering if the price is worth it, in my opinion absolutely. If you are looking for a quick and easy way to make chord progressions, or a more advanced tool to help you write your song, Tonaly can definitely help! My only two suggestions are an option to have the chords play in different octaves (without auto inversions having to be on). When I want to listen to a higher octave I have to turn on auto inversions, which is a feature I love but I don’t always want to use it. My other suggestions is for the chords outside the current key to still have a Roman numeral to show how they relate to the original key. (For example showing Cm as i, when the project is in a key of C. Or C# showing as bII, at least I think that’s how it would be written. I’m still learning! ? Show more

I think the app would be best for someone who has more experience writing songs, but in that case they probably wouldn’t need an app to memorize there circle of fifths. There are many online tools for the circle of fifths, which is what this app is basically about. If the app was more user friendly, and more beginner based, and had drum tracks and more, it would be worth the 7 dollars, app should be free based on its value. I haven’t used it once. Beginner at songwriting, been playing for a few years, just learning to improvise and write my own songs and sing. Show more

I searched unsuccessfully to find an app that included 5 string scales, modes, etc. This app is well worth the money. I wish I’d have found it sooner!!

This app was designed by someone who is obviously a genius who somehow understands intuitive usability and the needs of a songwriter. It’s mind blowing how great this app is for creating the form of a song. Chord progressions that you can play in different instruments, arrangement, and more. I’m happy to write this review. I am genuinely obsessed with this app and I can’t think of anyway it could be better but perhaps it could add Abelton link support? It’s basically perfect though. I think it’s my new favorite app. It’s useful and fun, It’s a musical secret weapon. If this is over the top it’s because this app has triggered a manic episode and I’m just super excited in general. But it doesn’t mean my rambling is full of bull. Show more

I’ve been looking for a tool like this for a while—I’m an audio engineer/songwriter/producer, and this makes a perfect portable companion that lets me compose easily when I’m out and about. It’s suggestion engine is also truly excellent. Honestly I’ve searched high and low, and this is the most intuitive, easy to use, and pragmatic software I’ve found (with excellent ux)—particularly bc I can drag the composition directly into my DAW from the desktop app! I love that I don’t need to create an account for this. It’s so great to have my files remain *mine*, and not be held hostage in some proprietary format in the cloud. Things i would be very happy to pay for in the future, though it’s so great right now, I wouldn’t want to bloat it (maybe 2.0 features or even separate apps that can import from Tonaly?): * I’d love to be able to add lyrics somehow, even if it’s totally disconnected from the chord progression ui * Tonaly for rhythm, melody, harmony, arrangements Saying that, I’m just very happy with this tool, and doing the arrangements in my DAW! Love the app very much and I don’t recall how much I paid for it but it was worth it. I got it many many years ago and didn’t end up using it but there has been significant updates sense then to where I’m glad I got in early. I know everyone has suggestions and I don’t mean to take anything from the app because it’s A1 but my main wish is that I could change the voicings manually— I am trying to replay chords in my head often so I don’t always recognize the inversions the app picks automatically with the tones I’m hearing in my mind. Also... a lesser point is— if you buy the Mac version you get the phone version also, I do wish it also worked in reverse— I wish having bought the phone version also got you the Mac version but I don’t recall if the pricing is compatible but even a discount would be preferred because had the Mac version been out when I bought this I’d have went strait to that. This app makes putting together parts of music together super easy; however, I wish I could control the octave of the chord.

I really enjoy this app it is very intuitive its a one of a kind app I love that it gives you everything you need to be creative in the lab (STUDIO) I write everything from Gospel to jazz to Prog Rock this little investment will keep even the newest producer on point thanks developers for making such an awesome and amazing Music Tool! Is there a way to print chord pictures under/over the chords names?

As a singer, I’ve always said that my greatest musical instrument was my ear: and this app definitely allows me to show and prove! The depth of chord progressions on this app is amazing. Additionally, I love the ability to “break the mold” with borrowing chords and modifying the root/bass. Furthermore, the fact that you can write in 4/4, ¾, ⅝, 6/8, and ⅞ time signatures is stupendous. If I could make any recommendations, I’d say further customization of inversions and the ability to have up to 8 notes per measure. If I have any sort of complicated rhythm, I currently have to double the tempo to create the rhythms I’d like in the song. Other than that, this app is PERFECTION. It works great for translating my wishes to instrumentalists in rehearsals so they can hear what I hear and we can more easily sync. Show more

Not really intuitive, bit chunky. Functions aren’t that straightforward either. Putting together a progression with this app is more effort than plain fun.

It’s funny, I usually look on the web when looking for theory or shopping for posters on theory. Sometimes I forget that apps are growing and getting better and better everyday. Especially when you learn file sharing and know how these apps can help develop your music production skills. The hard work these developers do is much appreciated by people who love music and want to learn. Shoutout to all the music app developers, we appreciate you!!!!! Make the app midi compatible please! I’d love to connect my midi keyboards with my apple adapter for some real fluidity and even better learning! I’d even pay for that upgrade! Show more

I know this is intended more as a helpful tool for those closer to the beginning of learning music, but that’s honesty why it’s more of a problem. More later, but where is the dominant 7b5 chord? Like G B Db F. This is all over many types of music, including it’s enharmonic French augmented 6th equivalent. The stacked tritones create boatloads of awesome tension which is why you at least used to see it in pop music all the time. I paid for this app to have a quick little tool to try out some interesting harmonies and jot down ideas, but I wish I hadn’t. First of all, I started in a minor. I wanted the g#dim leading tone chord, selected this from the borrowed section, and found an Ab dim chord. Spelling matters! A flattened note created downward tension, while a sharpened one creates upward tension. This is confusing to beginners who are trying to learn theory, and even worse if someone made a lead sheet and took it to anyone more experienced to play. They’d be confused and not really get the harmony and what to do with it. Different spellings of chords and notes have very different connotations, resolutions, and feel in various melodies. Theory is about describing and articulating these things, not right and wrong. Handicapping the spelling handicaps the ability to describe and communicate music. After becoming frustrated, I purchased the additional scales add on. This doesn’t actually add anything as far as chords or spelling. It just changes the menu options, and some places like the melodic minor, where you can find a dom7b5 or g#dim naturally, don’t have them available. Former doesn’t exist, latter still shows as Abdim. Some of the expanded scales just have wrong chords because of this. The app advertises “custom chords,” but you cannot add a custom chord. You can select a few flavor/color options, but nowhere can you say “I want this note, that note, and that note.” This wouldn’t be a problem if many common fascinating and wonderful chord varieties weren’t just missing. Rolling Stones’ gimme shelter opens with a c#sus24… unavailable. Where is a b9? Where is a #11? I get it’s basic. I get it’s beginner. No dom7b5 though? No correct spelling? No real ability to make a “custom chord” or add or remove a note? Do not use this for serious writing, or even for learning. You will pick up some bad habits that will confuse other musicians and set you up for failure if you ever take a formal music theory course. Show more
